Workshops start at 10 am with an introduction to the workshop, the tools you will be using to shape your handplane and the processes involved.
We will then give you your blank, you will choose your shape and with our tuition and guidance, you will mark it out, cut it to a rough shape, and then use various tools to fine-tune your hand plane to your chosen style.
By the end of the day your handplane will be perfectly shaped and sanded smooth, all by you.
All that’s left to do is stamp it, oil it, then you can look forward to your first outing in the surf!

5-Day Workshops
Surfboards from £2600, all SUPs £3500
All 5-day courses start at 10 am on day one, 9 am thereafter and finish around 5-6 pm except day three which will finish later.
You can build a paddleboard or surfboard with us here at Planed on a 5-day course. The course outline is identical to whichever board you build.
Day 1 Introduction to the workshop, tools and processes you will be using over the 5 days to build your board.
You will mark out, glue and clamp the internal spine and ribs onto the bottom of your board.
Day 2 Remove the clamps and lay the foundation and starter strips to the rails of the board, followed by building up the rails to a point where they will be ready to attach the deck.
Day 3 This is the busiest day of the week and a lot needs to be achieved, but we will guide you through every step of the way.
• Nose and tail blocking: this involves glueing on the solid timber which will make up these parts of the board.
• Vent and Fin blocking: placing internal reinforced areas inside the board.
• Blending the rails into the ribs, ready to glue the deck on.
• Glueing and clamping the deck down onto the board.
Day 4 Shaping, this is where all your hard work over the last few days starts to take shape as you plane, sand and fair.
Day 5 Final fine-tuning, planing and sanding the board, paying particular attention to the rails to make sure they are perfectly blended into the bottom and deck of your board.
Then all that’s left to do is sign and stamp your very own unique, one-of-a-kind, beautiful hand-crafted SUP or Surfboard.
Then leave your board with us to work our magic. We will fit vents, handles (for SUPs only) and fin boxes, then glass and polish the board. We shall notify you when your board is ready for collection or special delivery (at an additional cost).
Custom-made board bags can also be supplied at an additional cost.
Hand-crafted in Dorset
Planed paddle and surfboards are hand-crafted on the beautiful Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. There is plenty of creative inspiration as we are located on the Jurrasic Coast with its fantastic surf spots and sheltered waters of Poole Harbour.
Our paddle and surfboards are created using a plywood/recycled foam fishbone spine and ribs, which are hollowed out to make them as light as possible, but still retaining the strength required to withstand the stresses involved with surfing and flat water paddling.
